Risks and limits you should know
- Cramping during and after the HSG
- A small risk of pelvic infection after the HSG, which is why antibiotics are given where indicated
- A reaction to the contrast dye, which is rare

Questions people ask
Why test both of us?
Because male factor is involved in a large share of couples who struggle to conceive, and a semen analysis is one of the cheapest tests there is. Testing only the woman is the most common and most expensive mistake in fertility care.
Will this tell us if we need IVF?
It will tell you whether you need IVF, something simpler, or nothing yet. Blocked tubes or very low sperm usually point to IVF. Irregular ovulation often responds to tablets. Fibroids may need surgery first. You get one recommendation, not a menu.
Is the HSG painful?
Most women describe it as strong period cramps for a few minutes. Taking a painkiller an hour beforehand helps. It is done after your period has ended and before you ovulate.
