What the test is for
Fertility specialists use AMH, often with an ultrasound count of follicles, to predict how many eggs the ovaries are likely to produce on IVF medicines and to choose the dose.
AMH is a poor guide to your chances of conceiving naturally. In a study of 750 women aged 30 to 44 who were trying for a baby, those with a low AMH were no less likely to conceive within a year than those with a normal level. Age matters more than any single AMH figure, and a low result is a reason to talk to a fertility doctor, not a verdict.

How to prepare
- No fasting. AMH can be taken on any day of the cycle.
- If you take the contraceptive pill or another hormonal method, tell the doctor: it can lower AMH.

What is a normal AMH level?
It depends on your age and the laboratory's method, so read it against the range on the report, with a fertility doctor.
Can I get pregnant with a low AMH?
Yes. A low AMH means fewer eggs in reserve, not that the eggs you have cannot make a pregnancy. Many women with a low AMH conceive naturally.
Should I do an AMH test before trying for a baby?
Not as a fertility check on its own, because it does not predict natural conception. See a doctor if you have been trying for a year, or for less time if you are 36 or over.
Can I pay at the lab?

How do I get my result?
