Fasting blood sugar test price in Nigeria
A fasting blood sugar (FBS) test costs ₦8,000 on Mezo, paid online and done at a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site. It measures the sugar (glucose) in your blood after at least 8 hours without food. What the test is for
One high result in someone without symptoms is repeated on another day before anyone is told they have diabetes. A doctor may also ask for an HbA1c (₦24,000), which reflects your average sugar over about three months and needs no fasting.
Fasting means no food and no drinks other than water. Tea with sugar, a soft drink or a small snack in the morning will raise the result.
A random blood sugar (₦10,000) can be taken at any time of day without fasting, and a doctor reads it differently.
When a doctor asks for it
- Thirst, passing urine often, tiredness or weight loss without trying
- A family history of diabetes, being overweight, or high blood pressure, as a check
- Known prediabetes, to follow it
- With diabetes, when your doctor wants a fasting reading
How to prepare
- Fast for at least 8 hours before the sample, usually overnight: water only.
- If you take insulin or tablets that can cause low sugar, ask your doctor how to manage them before a fasting test.
- Go to the site early in the morning, and bring something to eat afterwards.
Go to the nearest emergency department now, not a lab, for
- Vomiting, deep or fast breathing, drowsiness or confusion with a high sugar
- A low sugar that does not improve after taking sugar
