What the test is for
Hepatitis C is spread through contact with infected blood, for example through shared needles or medical and dental treatment where equipment was not properly sterilised. It is not spread by hugging, kissing or sharing food. Most people have no symptoms, sometimes for years, while the virus can slowly harm the liver.
The WHO says around 30% of people clear the virus on their own within six months, which is why a positive antibody test is followed by a test for the virus itself. Antiviral tablets, usually taken for 8 to 12 weeks, cure more than 95% of people. There is no vaccine, so testing is how it is found.
A hepatitis B test (₦12,000) is often done at the same time, since both viruses spread through blood.
When a doctor asks for it
- Medical or dental treatment, or a transfusion, where equipment or blood may not have been safe
- Ever sharing needles or other injecting equipment
- Abnormal liver function tests, or yellow eyes or skin

In Lagos: a sample taken at home
In Lagos a nurse or phlebotomist can take your blood sample at home and bring it to the laboratory. It is booked and paid for online, with the price for your area shown before you pay. Home collection is only in Lagos for now.

How much is a hepatitis C test in Nigeria?

What does a positive hepatitis C test mean?
That you have had the virus at some time. A viral load test shows whether it is still in your blood. A doctor reads both and, if it is active, arranges treatment.
Can hepatitis C be cured?
Yes, in most people, with antiviral tablets taken for 8 to 12 weeks. You can catch it again afterwards, so avoid the risks that led to it.
My test was negative, but I was exposed recently. Am I clear?
A very recent infection can be missed. A doctor may advise testing again after six months.
Can I pay at the lab?

How do I get my result?
