An echocardiogram (echo) costs ₦74,800 on Mezo, paid online and done at a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site. It is an ultrasound scan of the heart that shows how well it pumps and how the valves and chambers work. It uses sound waves, not radiation, and usually takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

What it is for
Doctors use an echo to find or follow heart failure, heart valve disease and heart conditions present from birth, to check the heart after a heart attack, and to see whether symptoms such as breathlessness or swollen ankles come from the heart.
The usual echo is done through the chest: you undress to the waist, lie on a couch, and a sonographer moves a probe with gel over your chest. Other kinds, a stress echo or an echo passed down the gullet, are hospital tests a cardiologist arranges.
An echo shows the heart's structure; an ECG (₦24,000) records its electrical rhythm. Many doctors ask for both.
When a doctor asks for it
- Breathlessness on everyday activity or when lying flat
- Swelling of the feet, ankles, legs or tummy
- After a heart attack
- Known heart failure or valve disease, to follow it
How to prepare
- Eat and drink as normal.
- Wear a top that is easy to take off. You can ask for a chaperone.
Go to the nearest emergency department now, not a lab, for
- Severe difficulty breathing, or pale, blue or grey lips or skin
- Chest pain or tightness, especially if it spreads to the arms, neck or jaw

Done at the site, not at home
A echocardiogram is booked at a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site and done there, on the site's own machine. It is not collected at home: home collection on Mezo is for blood samples only. Call the site before you go to ask how to prepare and when to come; its number is on its city page.

How to book

- Call the site to ask when to come, then go with your code. When the report is released, you read it on Mezo.

Yes. It uses ultrasound, the same as a pregnancy scan. Sometimes a dye is injected into a vein to make the pictures clearer, and you are then watched for a short while afterwards.
Can I pay at the lab?
No. You tick the test on Mezo, choose a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site that does it and pay online before you go. The price you pay is the price on this page, and the site has your order waiting when you arrive.
How do I get my result?
When the laboratory has checked and released your result, we send you a text message and you read it on Mezo, signed in to your account. If a doctor on Mezo asked for the test, they see it too. Mezo does not promise a result time on this page, because it depends on the test and the site.
