What it is for
Ultrasound is the usual scan when gallstones are suspected, and it shows the liver, the kidneys and any fluid in the tummy. It is painless and uses no radiation.
A 'stomach scan' does not diagnose an ulcer. Ulcers are found with a test for the H. pylori germ or a gastroscopy, a camera passed into the stomach, which a doctor arranges after hearing your symptoms.
When a doctor asks for it
- Pain in the upper right side of the tummy, where gallstones are possible
- Yellow eyes or skin (jaundice), alongside blood tests
- A swollen tummy, or a lump a doctor can feel
- Abnormal liver or kidney blood tests
- Following up something seen on an earlier scan
How to prepare
- Call the site before you go and ask how to prepare. Scans of the gallbladder and upper tummy sometimes need an empty stomach, and a whole abdomen scan often needs a full bladder.
- Wear clothes that let you uncover your tummy easily.
Go to the nearest emergency department now, not a lab, for
- Severe tummy pain that does not ease, with a high temperature or shivering
- Yellow skin or yellow whites of the eyes with tummy pain or fever

Done at the site, not at home
A abdominal scan is booked at a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site and done there, on the site's own machine. It is not collected at home: home collection on Mezo is for blood samples only. Call the site before you go to ask how to prepare and when to come; its number is on its city page.

- Call the site to ask when to come, then go with your code. When the report is released, you read it on Mezo.

Which do I need, an abdominal scan or a whole abdomen scan?
Book what is written on your request form. An abdominal scan looks at the upper tummy; a whole abdomen scan adds the pelvis. If you have no form, a doctor by video can tell you which one answers your question.
Can an abdominal scan show an ulcer?
No. An ulcer is found with an H. pylori test or a gastroscopy. A doctor can tell you which one you need.
Can I pay at the lab?
No. You tick the test on Mezo, choose a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site that does it and pay online before you go. The price you pay is the price on this page, and the site has your order waiting when you arrive.
How do I get my result?
When the laboratory has checked and released your result, we send you a text message and you read it on Mezo, signed in to your account. If a doctor on Mezo asked for the test, they see it too. Mezo does not promise a result time on this page, because it depends on the test and the site.
