What it is for

Each month a follicle in the ovary grows and releases an egg. Tracking measures it on the days your doctor sets, until it is ready or the egg has been released. Fertility doctors use it to time sex or insemination, and to see how the ovaries respond to medicines that help you ovulate.

NICE advises that women taking clomifene to help them ovulate are offered ultrasound monitoring during at least the first cycle, so the dose can be set to keep down the chance of twins or more.

When a doctor asks for it

  • On medicines to help you ovulate, such as clomifene or letrozole, as your fertility doctor directs
  • Before insemination (IUI), to time it
  • Irregular cycles, when a doctor wants to see whether you ovulate

How to prepare

  • Book the days your doctor gives you: the first scan is timed to your cycle.
  • Call the site to agree the scan days before you pay, so each one falls on the right day.
  • These are internal scans: you can ask for a chaperone and ask for the scan to stop at any time.

Where you can do it

At BeaconHealth Diagnostics sites in 19 cities, at the same price in each. Not every site has every machine, so when you book you are offered only the sites that do this test.

Done at the site, not at home

A follicle tracking scan is booked at a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site and done there, on the site's own machine. It is not collected at home: home collection on Mezo is for blood samples only. Call the site before you go to ask how to prepare and when to come; its number is on its city page.

How much is follicular tracking in Nigeria?

On Mezo one scan is ₦15,000, three days ₦27,000 and five days ₦32,000, paid online and done at a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site.

What does follicle tracking mean?

A series of ultrasound scans that follow an egg sac (follicle) as it grows in the ovary, to see whether and when you ovulate.

Do I need follicle tracking to get pregnant?

Most couples do not. It is used when a fertility doctor needs to see ovulation, usually during treatment. If you have been trying for a year, or for less time if you are 36 or over, start with a doctor and tests for both partners.

Can I pay at the lab?

No. You tick the test on Mezo, choose a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site that does it and pay online before you go. The price you pay is the price on this page, and the site has your order waiting when you arrive.

How do I get my result?

When the laboratory has checked and released your result, we send you a text message and you read it on Mezo, signed in to your account. If a doctor on Mezo asked for the test, they see it too. Mezo does not promise a result time on this page, because it depends on the test and the site.
