What it is for
Antenatal care offers every pregnant woman at least two scans: a dating scan at 11 to 14 weeks, which sets the due date and can include the nuchal translucency measurement used in screening for Down's syndrome, and an anomaly scan at 18 to 21 weeks, which looks in detail at how the baby is developing. Your doctor or midwife may ask for more, depending on your health and the pregnancy.
There are no known risks to mother or baby from an ultrasound scan. A scan can find something that leads to further decisions or tests, so it helps to think beforehand about what you would want to be told.
A scan is part of antenatal care, not a substitute for it. Start antenatal care early, with the blood tests offered at the first visit.
When a doctor asks for it
- Early in pregnancy, to date it and see how many babies there are
- At 11 to 14 weeks, with the nuchal translucency measurement if you choose screening
- At 18 to 21 weeks, for the anomaly scan
- Later in pregnancy, when the doctor wants to check the baby's growth or position
How to prepare
- Bring your antenatal card and any earlier scan reports.
- Call the site before you go: early in pregnancy you may be asked to come with a full bladder.
Go to the nearest emergency department now, not a lab, for
- Heavy bleeding or severe tummy pain in pregnancy
- A severe headache with blurred vision or swelling of the face and hands
- Later in pregnancy, a baby who is moving less than usual
Where you can do it
