What the test is for
Prolactin rises for many ordinary reasons: pregnancy and breastfeeding, stress, and a difficult blood draw. Some medicines raise it too, including several used for mental health and some for sickness, such as metoclopramide. An underactive thyroid can raise it as well, which is why a thyroid test (₦50,000) is often done with it.
When the level is clearly high and no other reason is found, a doctor looks for a small, non-cancerous growth in the pituitary gland (a prolactinoma), which is usually treated with tablets. A single sample is usually enough, as long as the blood draw was not stressful.

- Irregular periods, or periods that have stopped, when you are not pregnant
- Milky discharge from the nipples when not breastfeeding
- Trying for a baby without success
- Low sex drive or erection problems in men, with a testosterone test
How to prepare
- No fasting. Sit and rest quietly for a few minutes before the sample.
- Tell the doctor every medicine you take, including any for mental health or for sickness.

Can men do a prolactin test?
Yes. In men a high prolactin can lower testosterone, sex drive and fertility. It is part of the male hormone profile (₦65,000).
My prolactin is a little high. Should I worry?
Not yet. Stress, a difficult blood draw and some medicines can raise it. A doctor usually checks your medicines, your thyroid and for pregnancy, and repeats the test before looking further.
Can I pay at the lab?

How do I get my result?
When the laboratory has checked and released your result, we send you a text message and you read it on Mezo, signed in to your account. If a doctor on Mezo asked for the test, they see it too. Mezo does not promise a result time on this page, because it depends on the test and the site.
