What the test is for
The Endocrine Society advises measuring total testosterone on a fasting morning sample, and repeating it to confirm before diagnosing a deficiency. Free testosterone (₦40,000) is added when the total is borderline, or when another condition changes the protein that carries it in the blood.
Testosterone falls slowly with age, by about 1% a year from 30 or 40, which by itself is unlikely to cause problems. Tiredness, low mood and low sex drive are often linked to stress, poor sleep, alcohol or weight, and a doctor looks at those too.
The Endocrine Society advises against starting testosterone treatment in men planning a baby soon. Do not buy or take testosterone without a doctor.
