What the test is for
Ferritin also rises with infection and inflammation, so a normal or high result does not always mean your iron is fine. The WHO's guidance on ferritin takes this into account, and a doctor reads the result with your symptoms and a full blood count (₦13,000).
Heavy periods and pregnancy are common causes of low iron, and slow bleeding in the gut is another. Treating it means finding the cause, not only taking iron tablets.
A very high ferritin can point to iron overload, such as the inherited condition haemochromatosis.
When a doctor asks for it
- Tiredness, breathlessness, palpitations or pale skin, with a full blood count
- Heavy periods, or pregnancy
- Anaemia found on a blood count, to see whether low iron is the cause
- On iron treatment, to check that stores are refilling
How to prepare
- No fasting for ferritin on its own.
- If you take iron tablets, tell the doctor who reads the result.

What does a low ferritin mean?
That your iron stores are low. A doctor looks for the cause, such as heavy periods, pregnancy, diet or blood loss from the gut, as well as treating it.
Can ferritin be normal when I am short of iron?
Yes. Infection and inflammation raise ferritin, which can hide low iron stores. A doctor reads it with your other results.
Can I pay at the lab?
No. You tick the test on Mezo, choose a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site that does it and pay online before you go. The price you pay is the price on this page, and the site has your order waiting when you arrive.
How do I get my result?
When the laboratory has checked and released your result, we send you a text message and you read it on Mezo, signed in to your account. If a doctor on Mezo asked for the test, they see it too. Mezo does not promise a result time on this page, because it depends on the test and the site.
